The Birth of Sanará Tulum: A Healing & Wellness Hotel

I’ve been busy recently, really busy!  There’s a good reason I haven’t put up many posts and that’s because a new chapter of my life is about to be birthed…

We have created and are building, Sanará Tulum – a healing & wellness hotel in Tulum, Mexico, about an hour and a half south of Cancun on the Riviera Maya, which will open in July 2014.

Sanará is truly an extension of me, together with my partner Charlie, and Living Simply Natural, and I look forward to sharing the development of the project here.  Much of what I write about will feature within Sanará – from the food in the beachfront restaurant, cafe & juice bar, to the therapies and treatments in the Wellness Center, and more.

For now, you can experience the vision at www.sanaratulum.com and please do get in touch if you would like to find out more.

Vegan/Gluten-Free/Refined Sugar-Free Cacao Oatmeal ‘Muffins’

I have been making these muffins as a late breakfast/brunch for almost a year now and friends keep asking if the recipe is on my blog, so finally I am putting it up!  They can be eaten warm and still slightly gooey straight from the oven, or cooled as a take away snack.  They will last for several days in an airtight container or longer in the fridge.

My lean, green (and incredibly effective) beauty routine…

I’ve written in the past about de-cluttering my life and reducing the amount of beauty products I use, and since moving to Tulum, Mexico I’ve honed the process even further, partly out of choice, and partly due to the fact that I couldn’t find many natural/organic products.  Now it’s time to share all!

Apart from two key raw and natural ingredients which I cannot live without: argan oil and coconut oil, there is very little else I use, or need on a daily basis.

I’ve already written posts exalting the benefits of coconut oil and argan oil so as I don’t want to repeat myself, I will get on with my routine…

Homemade Coconut Milk

When I was living in the UK, I dreamt of a tropical island lifestyle where I could go outside, lop off a few coconuts from the trees and make my own coconut milk, whilst padding around in a bikini.  That dream is now a reality! And while I’m not living on an island, Tulum is a tropical paradise where coconuts do grow on trees!

So, having made coconut milk hundreds of times over the years, I suppose I should share this simple recipe, with my new tropical twist!

Why Tulum?

When I tell people that I now live in Mexico, there is one question people always ask, ‘why in the world did you choose Tulum?’

If you know Tulum, you would know exactly why.  If you don’t know Tulum, I will try to give a little understanding of its charming allure and why we chose to live here.

A new life…in Mexico

After a flurry of posts last year, I have been quiet for some time now.  The reason?  Well, we moved to Tulum, Mexico!

I don’t really have an excuse for not writing for so long, especially as the transition process would have been quite interesting to follow, but it’s only now that I feel settled and ready to pick up again, sharing a new angle on ‘The Essence of My Instincts’, from a tropical beach paradise!

Life in Mexico has its benefits, and its challenges but overall we love it here and could not be happier with our choice to relocate from the UK.   More to follow very soon…

The Importance of a Good Scrub! Body Brushing and Exfoliation

The skin is the largest organ of the human body – do you remember that from school?  Well, it’s true and without getting all biological, it’s also a major channel for absorption and elimination – both of good and bad things.

On a holistic level, if your skin is not healthy and functioning as it should be, it is a sign that something is not right within the ‘system’ of your body as it works to expel toxins or function with a lack of nutrients.

Conversely, if you put toxic materials (chemicals, or even seemingly harmless cleaning/beauty products) on your skin, these will be absorbed into your body, compounding the problem or creating more issues!

Homemade ‘Chia Goodness’ Breakfast Mix

I came across, Chia Goodness recently while browsing some blogs for breakfast ideas, immediately fell in love with it and decided to try to make up my own version.  Now I should point out that being in the UK,  I have never seen Chia Goodness up close, or even tasted it, but the ingredients looked so appetising and I felt that it would be simple to knock up a batch of my own.

Are hankies socially acceptable these days?

Until the advent of the modern paper facial tissue in 1924, centuries had passed with people of all social classes utilising handkerchiefs or rags of some sort to blow/dab their noses, mop their brows, and dry the odd tear.

So nowadays, with disposable paper tissues available to everyone, why would you choose to use a hankie?  Aren’t these little squares of material disgusting, germ-spreading items which should be banished to a long-gone era?

Well, I beg to differ!

Natural Washing Solutions…Soapnuts, Homemade Laundry Powder, and Vinegar

Yesterday I made up a new batch of laundry washing powder and realised I hadn’t done a cleaning post in a while so here I go…

As with all other cleaning products, we are conditioned to believe that we need to buy commercial washing powders or liquids to keep our clothes and laundry clean, free of stains, and smelling lovely.  Not only do these commercial products contain a plethora of chemicals which are harmful to the environment and humans, but the recent packaging ‘improvements’ now see so many of them in solid plastic tubs.  What was wrong with cardboard?!
